Who We Are...

Part of Deepak Foundation's Annual Report, 2001-2002

Deepak Medical Foundation and Deepak Charitable Trust (together known as DEEPAK FOUNDATION) were set up by the corporate group - "DEEPAK" (Deepak Nitrite Ltd. and Deepak Fertilizers and Petrochemicals Corporation Limited) in the early eighties. The corporate group, realizing its social responsibility to the community and with the objective of improving the quality of life of the local community set up these two organizations. The mandate of Deepak Medical Foundation (DMF) was to provide curative medical services and Deepak Charitable Trust (DCT) was set up to initiate and aid community development programs.

Our History....

Under the aegis of Deepak Medical Foundation (DMF) a fifteen-bed hospital was established in 1991 at Nandesari (an industrial estate twenty kilometers north of Baroda) which was staffed by one resident medical doctor and paramedical staff. In addition to the services offered by the hospital, DMF used to organize several health camps.

Deepak Charitable Trust (DCT) was set up in 1982 to cater to the needs of cyclone victims in Saurashtra. It later organized a series of cattle care camps. For the first ten years of its existence it followed a welfare approach. But in the early nineties there was a paradigm shift in DCT's approach of working and it adopted sustainable community development programs in the fields of health, education, livelihood and women's empowerment. The work focused on villages around the industrial estate of Nandesari.

Our Vision...

We visualize our women with the expanded horizons of autonomous decision-making and control over resources and body; become equal partners to their male counterparts. Thus envisaging the ultimate goal of complete development.

Our Philosophy....

Deepak Foundation believes that community development can be brought about through women's development, as the potential of women is still largely untapped. It aims to create awareness in women in the sphere of health and to build their capacities as income generators and educators, thereby instilling in them a high sense of self-worth and confidence. Deepak Foundation believes that once women are given the opportunity to empower themselves development will occur naturally. The interventions initiated by it are in response to the felt needs of the community. Community involvement is sought at all levels of project planning and implementation.
